What makes an organic landscape…..well "organic"?

How do I make my home garden or lawn organic? These are just a few of questions that we got after telling people that we we were creating a blog covering organic landscaping. By focusing just on a few areas you can have your own organic landscape. There are several benefits to having an eco friendly garden, one is that it will help your wallet. "Green" or natural gardening methods can actually save you money, by lowering electric costs and saving you from having to purchase expensive synthetic fertilizers and pesticides that can be harmful to your health. Also you can comfortably know that your children can play safely in the lawn, and it's healthy for the environment.

Getting Started!

An easy start can be by figuring out and creating a list of plants that are native to you local area or region. Using local plants that thrive under the same growing conditions will make them easier to care for. When you introduce exotic plants that grow under very different conditions you will raise the chances of you having to use chemicals to assist in their healthy growth. The main focus of any home landscape is the lawn. Most people feel that you have to apply pesticides and use chemical fertilizers to have a lush, full, and green lawn. However by simply applying a few practices using natural methods, you can have have a healthy beautiful lawn. A great way to add to a healthy eco friendly garden is to promote grass growth and better grass roots. Aeration is just that act of punching holes into the ground and will allow you roots to grow easier and deeper by relieving soil compaction. Organisms, like earthworms, that actually help the health of your grass, have more room to move about and make homes. This will result in a naturally healthy grass that withstands pests better and keeps weeds out. By performing simple practices like top dressing and over seeding you can improve the health of your lawn. Eco friendly top dressing is when you spinkle grass clippings half and half with sand over your lawn. This actually improves the lawn rooting, creating healthier, hardier grass, without fertilizer. Over seeding is using more that 1 and 1/2 times more seed during the set up of you lawn. This will help promote quick grass growth that is thick and able to fight weeds.

Organic compost can be made by combining grass clippings and left over organic materials from the garden. Allow them to turn them into mulch and simply sprinkle them over your lawn as a organic fertilizer.
